Sotiris Sourmelis

Sotiris is a Consultant, conducting policy, market, feedstock, sustainability, and technology analysis across the bioeconomy sector, with a particular focus on biofuels production and agricultural waste valorisation. He is responsible for delivering high quality reports and models that allow public and private organisations to make robust and evidence-based decisions.

Sotiris joined us in 2017, having graduated with a Master’s degree in Environmental technology from Imperial College London. During his studies, Sotiris participated in the Veolia Waste Management project which involved a waste management system optimization proposal as well as the identification of investment opportunities for Veolia. Moreover, he carried out research on how circular economy principles can be implemented in the case of coffee cups, proposing alternative courses of action to tackle the problem with coffee cup disposal.

Previously, Sotiris completed a Master’s degree in Energy and Environmental Management at the University of Piraeus, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science at University of the Aegean.

Key Projects

  • Modelled emergence of development fuel technologies: Developed a flexible fuel deployment model and prepared a report for a public organisation that estimates development fuel volumes that can potentially be supplied in the UK by 2032, under 3 different scenarios.
  • Consultancy for a leading fuel supplier: Supported a leading fuel supplier, to successfully supply sustainable biofuels in the UK transport market. This included assistance to meet the requirements of financial support mechanisms, as well as the development of a bespoke RTFCs and GHG credits calculator.
  • Review of advanced biofuel technologies: Lead contributor to report for Australian wood products’ manufacturer providing independent advice on the development status of advanced renewable diesel technologies available to valorise forestry and sawmill residues.
  • Techno-economic analysis of Low Carbon Fossil Fuels: Responsible for a comparative economic assessment of numerous technologies that can result in low carbon fossil fuels.
  • Biopropane: Feedstocks, feasibility and our future pathway: A report undertaken on behalf of Liquid Gas UK, that demonstrates the deployment pathway for a full switch from fossil LPG to bio-propane in the UK by 2040. Responsible for carrying out a technology assessment of different BioLPG production pathways and for the assessment of feedstock requirements for active and planned developments.
  • AgroCycle: An EU Horizon 2020 project aiming to understand and address how to make best use of the full range of waste streams associated with the agri-food industry. I was the work-package leader for the development of business models applicable to the Agrocycle project’s technical outcomes.
  • Building a Bioenergy Business Case for Ireland: Led the delivery of an AD biomethane opportunities appraisal project for an Irish investor, which required feedstock assessment, policy analysis, as well as business model development.
  • BEIS evidence gathering for bioenergy heating technologies in off-gas grid homes: Led an in-depth review on bioliquid boiler technologies, markets and fuel supply chains as part of an assessment of the role of bioliquids and bioLPG on the decarbonisation of the domestic off-gas grid heating systems in the United Kingdom and their potential for inclusion in the UK’s RHI scheme.
  • Opportunities for use of fuel grade ethanol beyond passenger cars: Prepared a report for a client that provides a brief overview of the potential added value of the UK ethanol sector beyond the next 10 years.
  • Methyl Salicylate Market. A rapid evidence assessment: Prepared a report, as part of the Horizon 2020 project DAFIA, which provides an overview of the methyl salicylate market, and evaluates the opportunities associated with the production of this compound using an alternative biotechnology route.
  • Environmental impact of sugar production: Supported the delivery of a report, for a biotechnology company working in the food sector, thatassesses the environmental impacts associated with sugarcane and sugar beet production and processing.
